The Environment

The Bennett family history has always been one of an Island's family and business dedicated to protecting the Islands environment whilst working to support ecology and community based projects that provide a legacy for future generations of Island residents and visitors.

This commitment starting back in the Edwardian days of Great Uncle Joe Bennett with his horse and cart and Frank Bennett removing unsightly seaweed from St Helens beach and recycled into fertiliser, through to H.J. Bennett as it is known today.

This care for the environment is re-enforced by a deep-rooted commitment to:

  • Prevent pollution and reducing carbon emissions by providing only locally sourced materials - reducing the carbon footprint that would normally be associated with the transportation of materials onto and across the Island.
  • Minimise waste by continually evaluating operations to ensure they are as efficient as possible.
  • Minimise emissions through the provision and selection of a flexible vehicle fleet and plant, that is more ‘fit for eco purpose’ – ensuring H.J. Bennett uses only vehicles and plant best suited to the need that works to reduce environmental impact.
  • Actively promote recycling both internally and amongst our customers and suppliers.
  • Source and promote a product range that works to minimise the environmental impact of both production and distribution of materials and services.
  • Work to not simply meet but exceed all the environmental legislation that relates to the Company and its operations and to be pro-active in this regard.
  • Invest in the Island's ecology through a positive approach to recycling and land restoration.
The company are winners of the prestigious Lloyds Cardnet Green Award for The Environment and received a Highly Commended Award for Social Investment at the 2015 Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. Accolades that bear testimony to a commitment to the Island's environment that started with Nigel’s great grandfather almost 100 years ago.

This commitment can be seen across day-to-day operations at H.J. Bennett and through the significant investment made by the company to not only enhance the Islands unique environment but protect its endangered species and fragile ecology.

As a company our success is measured and reflected in many of our environmental and social led projects, which include, but are not limited to:

Caring for the Island

“It is so nice to see a business that values its heritage and the Island. I will certainly be looking out for the grey lorries from now on.”
